“Round Up at the Rink” Raises over $1K

Grand RapidsVan Andel Arena’s inaugural “Round Up at the Rink – to fight cancer” raised over $1,000 through the month of October for Cancer Families United by accepting donations at concession stands during events. SMG collected $530.02 via donation jars located at each concession stand and pledged to match the amount raised for a grand total donation amount of $1,060.04 in the name of Dean Gust, Van Andel Arena’s Head Ticket Taker, who lost his battle with cancer in 2015.

As part of the month-long promotion, SMG recognized Van Andel Arena staff member and breast cancer survivor Bessie Price, who selected Cancer Families United as the beneficiary of the month’s donations.

“I hope that this donation can help make a difference in the lives of kids and their families who are battling cancer,” said Price. “I’m glad that I can be a part of something like this, and I look forward to helping SMG grow the Round Up for the future.”

SMG looked to honor cancer survivors on staff with the opportunity to choose the charity that would receive the donations as well as a night out on the town including two tickets to a show of their choice, dinner at The B.O.B. before the show, concession vouchers from SAVOR…Grand Rapids, and car service provided by Executive Coach Service. Price was nominated by co-workers and attended the Janet Jackson concert on November 1.

This was the first year SMG ran the “Round Up” promotion with the intention of making it an annual event every October.
