Elton John Kendall College Contest

Van Andel Arena, Kendall College of Art & Design team up for Elton John design contest

Students compete for chance to design Elton-inspired outfit and $1,000 scholarship

Grand Rapids — SMG-managed Van Andel Arena is teaming up with the Pamella Roland DeVos School of Fashion Studies of Kendall College of Art & Design of Ferris State University (KCAD Fashion Studies) to design something special for Elton John’s upcoming visit to Grand Rapids, a garment for Elton himself inspired by the many looks he has flaunted throughout his career.

Ten KCAD Fashion Studies students have submitted a collection of three different outfits, and each collection will be on display on Van Andel Arena’s Facebook page. The student with the winning collection will have the opportunity to create an outfit to display at the arena for Elton John and receive a $1,000 scholarship on behalf of SMG/Van Andel Arena.

The winner will be decided by two rounds of fan voting, and anybody with a Facebook account can vote. To cast your vote, head to Van Andel Arena’s Facebook page and Like the photo of the collection that you like best in the “Elton John KCAD Fashion Studies Project” photo album. Fans can also cast an additional vote once per day by commenting “FAVORITE” in the comments section of their favorite collection. Fans are asked to judge each collection based on creativity, style, and relevance.

Round 1 voting will be available until Thursday, September 13 at 5 PM, with the Top 4 collections being announced at that time. Round 2 of voting begins immediately following the announcement of the Top 4 until Friday, September 14 at 4 PM. The winning collection and recipient of the $1,000 scholarship will be announced at 5 PM on September 14.

“Collaborative thinking makes great things happen and partnering KCAD Fashion Studies and Van Andel Arena/SMG is no exception,” said Lori Faulkner, Fashion Studies Chair of the Pamella Roland DeVos School of Fashion at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University. “This collaboration is a fantastic opportunity for student designers to use Elton John as their muse and let their creativity run wild.”
