2022 Minor League Markets
Grand Rapids / Comstock Park, Michigan Rank #6
09/21/2022
6. Grand Rapids-Comstock, Mich.
■ TEAMS (FIRST SEASON): Class A West Michigan Whitecaps (1994), AHL Grand Rapids Griffins (1996), NBA G League Grand Rapids Gold (2014)
■ VENUES (YEAR OPENED): LMCU Ballpark (1994), Van Andel Arena (1996)
The reigning No. 1 was hurt this time around by a first-round knockout of the Griffins in the 2018 and 2019 playoffs and not qualifying last season. How much do playoffs help? In their 2017 championship run, they drew an extra 83,000 fans. The arena was renovated in 2020, and this summer’s relocation of the Gold from an old arena in the suburbs to Van Andel downtown should certainly provide the market a boost.
