Van Andel Arena® Begins $1.2 Million Concourse Expansion Project

In an effort to alleviate congestion and gain revenue opportunities, Van Andel Arena has begun a $1.2 million project to expand the concourse area. The construction is intended to ease congestion at a choke point on the northwest corner of the arena. The project will expand the concourse by about 3,500 square feet, extending the area outside the building just south of the main entrance at West Fulton Street and Ottawa Avenue.

Designed by Rossetti Architects, the arena’s original architects, the concourse expansion is part of the Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention/Arena Authority’s (CAA) capital improvements budget. The CAA, along with arena management firm SMG, has been working with Southfield-based Rossetti for over a year on the plans. General Contractor Rockford Construction Company, Inc. has sub-contracted to use all local firms, including minority-owned businesses, to complete the expansion. A list of sub-contractors is available upon request.

Plans include a much wider pathway on the northwest corner to alleviate much of the congestion that has been common at large Van Andel Arena events. Along with increased space to more conveniently serve as a comfortable walkway for patrons, additional concession stands and tables will also be placed in the new concourse area.

Updates on the construction have been and will continue to be given on Van Andel Arena’s official Facebook page, blog, and website. Construction is not expected to affect any events being held in the arena.
